Bookplates typically bear a name, motto, device, coat-of-arms, crest, badge, or any motif that relates to the owner of the book, or is requested by him from the artist or designer. The name of the owner usually follows an inscription such as "from the books of . . . " or "from the library of . . . ", or in Latin, ex libris .... The Eton Print Rooms are proud to be working with artist Gordon Collett to produce his original "Ex Libris" designs. An established artist specialising in trompe l’œil murals, a painter of portraits and an illustrator, Gordon's vocation has included much pen and ink work, such as his beautiful line-drawn bookplates (left). Gordon says of his work: "My plate designs are drawn in ink by mixed pen and brush work. It is of great satisfaction to me that bookplates offer an avenue for the pursuit of pen and ink, as places to use the medium are limited, and it is a medium I hold dear. The designs are then scanned and printed digitally, onto a ready-gummed quality paper. The computer allows some cleaning up of the image to make it reproduce as close to the original intention as possible, but the computer is not used to generate the design; they are all still hand-drawn images. I always provide the original hand-drawn artwork as part of the commission, further adding to its uniqueness."
